SEO for Beginners: How to Get Your Website Found on Google

When you type something into Google and hit search, the results that appear did not get there by accident. Each one is there because the website owner did specific things to tell Google what their page is about and why it is worth showing to searchers. That process is SEO — Search Engine Optimisation.

You do not need to be a technical expert to do basic SEO well. Here is what matters most.

How Google Decides What to Show

Google crawls billions of web pages and tries to match each search query with the most relevant, trustworthy result. The main factors it considers: what the page is about (relevance), how well-regarded the site is (authority), and how good the experience is for the user (page quality).

SEO is the process of improving all three of these signals for your website.

On-Page SEO: What You Can Control Directly

Page titles — The clickable headline in search results. Every page needs a unique, descriptive title that includes the primary keyword. "Best Tax Consultant in Jaipur | Singh and Associates" is better than "Home | Singh and Associates."

Meta descriptions — The short paragraph under the title in search results. Not a ranking factor, but it directly affects whether people click. Write a compelling 150-character summary of the page.

Headings — Use H1 for the main page heading (one per page), H2 for sections, H3 for subsections. This helps Google understand your page structure.

Content — Write for the reader first, Google second. Cover the topic genuinely and thoroughly. Include the keywords your audience uses naturally, not awkwardly forced in.

Images — Add descriptive alt text to every image. This helps Google understand image content and improves accessibility.

Technical SEO: The Foundation

Your site needs to be technically sound before any content optimisation has full effect. Key checks: HTTPS enabled, pages load in under 3 seconds on mobile, there are no broken links, your sitemap is submitted to Google Search Console, and the robots.txt file is not blocking important pages.

Off-Page SEO: Building Authority

Links from other websites are the primary signal of authority. A news article linking to your site, a business directory listing, a guest blog post — each one tells Google that other sites consider you relevant and trustworthy. The quality of links matters more than the quantity.

How Long Does SEO Take?

For a new website targeting competitive keywords, expect 4–6 months before significant rankings appear. For local searches in less competitive areas, sometimes 6–8 weeks. SEO is a long-term investment — the results compound and continue long after you stop actively working on it.
