Local SEO: How to Make Your Business Show Up When Nearby Customers Search
When someone in your city searches "plumber near me" or "best salon in Koramangala," three businesses appear in what Google calls the local three-pack — the map results at the top. Those three businesses get the overwhelming majority of clicks. Everyone below them gets the leftovers.
Local SEO is the process of getting into that three-pack and staying there.
Start with Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the single most important factor in local search rankings. If you have not claimed and verified yours, do it today — it is free and takes about 15 minutes.
Once verified, make it complete:
- Add every category that applies to your business
- Write a description that includes your services and your city
- Upload at least 10 high-quality photos — of your premises, team, and work
- Add your exact service area
- Set accurate business hours and keep them updated
- Post updates at least once a week (just like a social media feed)
Reviews Are Not Optional
Google uses the number, recency, and rating of your reviews as a major local ranking signal. A business with 50 recent 5-star reviews will rank above a better business with 10 old reviews, almost every time.
The best way to get more reviews: ask every satisfied customer directly, at the right moment. Send a WhatsApp message with a direct link to your review page. Make it one tap away. Most happy customers will leave a review if you ask — they just never think to do it otherwise.
Consistency Across Directories
Your business name, address, and phone number should be identical across every listing online — Google, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMart, Facebook, your website. Even small differences (Road vs Rd, +91 vs 0) confuse Google and hurt your local rankings.
Audit your listings and correct any inconsistencies. This is tedious but genuinely impactful.
Create Location-Specific Pages on Your Website
If you serve multiple areas, create a dedicated page for each one: "Wedding photography in Pune," "Pest control in Navi Mumbai." Each page should have genuine content about that area — not just the same template with the city name swapped.
These pages can rank for local searches in each area and funnel visitors to your contact form or booking system.
