Landing Page Design: How to Turn Clicks into Customers

A landing page has one job: convert. Unlike a homepage that serves multiple purposes, a landing page is built around a single goal — getting the visitor to take one specific action. This focus is what makes landing pages dramatically more effective than sending ad traffic to a general website.

The Anatomy of a High-Converting Landing Page

Headline — This needs to communicate your core value proposition in one sentence. Visitors decide in 3–5 seconds whether to read on. Your headline determines whether they do. Be specific: "Get a professional business website in 7 days — starting at ?15,000" is better than "We build websites."

Subheadline — One sentence that extends the headline and handles an objection or adds detail. "100% custom design, mobile-optimised, with SEO built in from day one."

Benefits, not features — Describe what the visitor gains, not what you do. "Your customers find you on Google" not "we do SEO." The distinction is always: what does this mean for the person reading it?

Social proof — Testimonials, reviews, client logos, case study results. People trust other people more than they trust businesses. Place proof near the call-to-action and throughout the page.

One clear call-to-action — One. Not five buttons going to different places. What is the single thing you want this visitor to do? Make that button prominent, repeated 2–3 times down the page, and use specific language: "Book a free strategy call" not just "Contact us."

What Kills Landing Page Conversions

  • Navigation menus that let visitors escape to the rest of your site
  • Slow loading (every second of load time reduces conversions)
  • Asking for too much information in forms (every extra field reduces completions)
  • Vague, generic copy that could apply to any business
  • No mobile optimisation

Testing and Improving

Landing pages should be tested and improved continuously. Change the headline, test a different CTA button colour, try a different order of sections. Even small improvements compound over hundreds or thousands of visitors into significantly more conversions.
