Hotel and Hospitality Digital Marketing: Filling Rooms Without the OTA Tax
Online Travel Agencies like MakeMyTrip, Booking.com, and Goibibo have made hotel distribution global — but at a steep price. Commission rates of 15–25% on every booking are standard. For a hotel with thin margins, this is a significant cost. Digital marketing is how hotels reduce their dependence on OTAs and drive more direct bookings.
The Direct Booking Goal
A guest who books directly through your website is more valuable than one who comes through an OTA in two ways: you pay no commission, and you have their contact details for future marketing. Over time, building a base of repeat direct-booking guests significantly improves your profitability.
The challenge: OTAs have better search rankings, more reviews, and price comparison tools that make them the default for first-time bookers. Your direct booking strategy needs to offer something OTAs cannot — a lower price, added perks, or a relationship.
Google Is the First Step in Most Travel Research
Travellers search destination-specific terms: "boutique hotel in Coorg," "business hotel near Delhi airport," "family resort in Lonavala." Appearing in these searches — either through SEO or Google Hotel Ads — puts you in the path of travellers before they reach an OTA.
Google Hotel Ads (integrated into Search and Maps) show your direct booking rate alongside OTA rates. If your direct price is competitive, many travellers will book directly to get the better deal.
Instagram for Destination Hotels
A hotel with genuinely beautiful rooms, views, food, or location has ready-made Instagram content. Consistent posting of high-quality photos and Reels builds a following of people who aspire to stay there — and keeps you visible when they are planning a trip.
User-generated content from guests is particularly powerful. Encourage tagging with a well-placed prompt in the room or at check-in. Reshare the best guest content (with permission). Real guest experiences are more persuasive than professional photography for most viewers.
Email Marketing for Repeat Bookings
Every guest is a potential repeat customer and referral source. Collect email addresses at check-in (with consent) and build a mailing list. Send seasonal promotions, event announcements, package launches, and personal anniversary offers. A guest who loved their stay is the easiest sale you will ever make.
