Facebook Ads vs Instagram Ads: Where Should Your Budget Go?

Facebook and Instagram ads are managed through the same platform — Meta Ads Manager. You can run the same campaign on both simultaneously, or choose one. The question of where to put your budget is worth thinking about carefully, because the audiences and ad behaviour are genuinely different.

The Audiences Are Different Ages

In India, Facebook's user base skews older — 25–45 is the core demographic, with strong representation of professionals, business owners, and parents. Instagram skews younger — 18–35 is the core, with particularly strong engagement from urban audiences in the 18–28 bracket.

This is a generalisation and varies by city and category, but it is a useful starting point. If you are selling financial planning services, Facebook is likely more relevant. If you are selling streetwear, Instagram almost certainly is.

The Content Formats Are Different

Instagram is a visual-first platform. Photo quality and video production value matter more here. Reels and Stories dominate engagement. Ads that look like native Instagram content perform far better than ads that obviously look like ads.

Facebook has a broader range of ad placements — the News Feed, Groups, Marketplace, and the right column on desktop. Text-heavy content performs better on Facebook than on Instagram. Facebook Events and Groups give advertisers options that Instagram does not.

Facebook Lead Forms vs Instagram Lead Forms

Both platforms offer native lead forms — ads where the contact form opens inside the app without leaving to a website. These generally outperform website click-through ads for lead generation because of the reduced friction.

In India, Facebook lead forms tend to produce higher volume leads at lower cost. Instagram leads tend to be more engaged but often fewer in number. For most businesses, running both and comparing cost-per-lead after 2–3 weeks is the best approach.

The Practical Answer

Run on both initially with a small test budget — ?100–?200 per day on each. After two weeks, look at your cost-per-click, cost-per-lead, and lead quality. Double down on what is working and reduce what is not.

The platforms themselves will also give you guidance — Meta's algorithm learns over time which placement delivers the best results for your objective, and the Advantage+ placement option lets it optimise automatically across both.
