E-commerce SEO: How to Get Your Online Store Found on Google

Running paid ads to your online store is fast but expensive. Every sale costs you in ad spend. SEO takes longer to produce results, but once your product pages are ranking, you get consistent traffic with no ongoing cost per click. For most e-commerce businesses, the long-term play is building both — paid ads for immediate sales, SEO for sustainable growth.

The E-commerce SEO Fundamentals

Product page titles and descriptions are your most direct SEO lever. Every product should have a unique title that includes the main keyword a buyer would search — "Men's cotton kurta white XL" tells Google exactly what the page is about. Descriptions should be original (not copied from the manufacturer) and written for the buyer, not stuffed with keywords.

Category pages are often where the biggest SEO wins are. A category page for "Women's kurtas" can rank for a high-volume search term and drive far more traffic than any individual product page. Add a genuine description of the category with helpful buying guidance at the top of each category page.

Technical SEO Issues Specific to E-commerce

  • Duplicate content — Product variants (different sizes, colours) can create near-identical pages that dilute your SEO. Use canonical tags to tell Google which version is primary.
  • Faceted navigation — Filter URLs (like /kurtas?colour=blue&size=XL) can generate thousands of near-duplicate pages. Configure these to be noindex or use canonical tags carefully.
  • Site speed — E-commerce sites often load slowly due to large product images. Compress images to WebP format, use lazy loading, and choose a fast hosting plan.
  • Structured data — Add Product schema markup to your product pages. This enables rich results in Google — star ratings, price, stock availability shown directly in search results — which significantly increases click-through rates.

Building Links to Your Store

Getting other websites to link to your store improves your domain authority and rankings. For e-commerce, effective approaches include: sending products to relevant bloggers for honest reviews, getting listed in product roundup articles ("Best ethnic wear brands in India"), and publishing genuinely useful buying guides that others want to reference.

Content Marketing for E-commerce

A blog on your store is not just decoration. Buying guides, comparison articles, and how-to content targeting informational searches can pull in shoppers at the research stage — before they have decided where to buy. "How to choose the right saree for your body type" brings in the exact audience your saree store wants to reach.
